Akagera National Park
Area: 1122 km2
Akagera National Park is located in the north east of Rwanda along the border with Tanzania and plays a major role in Rwanda tourism. It is named after the Akagera River that flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into a labyrinth of lakes of which the largest is Lake Ihema. The rolling hills of Acacia and Brachystegia Woodland coupled with scattered grassland and swamp-fringed lakes along the meandering Akagera watercourse combine to create a park of breathtaking scenic beauty. Nyungwe National Park

Nyungwe National Park offers a rare and important habitat for many species, especially primates and birds. And at over 1000 km2, Nyungwe is Africa’s largest protected mountain rainforest.
In southwestern Rwanda, a tract of unspoiled mountain rain forest home to chimpanzees and a dozen other primates—not to mention hundreds of species of birds – Nyungwe is a must see spot for a thrilling nature and wildlife experience.

History and Culture – 1994 Rwanda Genocide Memorial
The Rwandan Genocide was a genocidal mass slaughter of ethnic Tutsis by ethnic Hutus beginning April-06-1994 and lasted 100 days; it is estimated 500,000 – 1,000,000 Rwandese lost their lives in the due course.

Circumstances surrounding the events included assassination of then president of Rwanda, Juvenal Habyarimana due to longstanding ethnic competition and tensions between the minority Tutsi, who had controlled power for centuries, and the majority Hutu peoples, who had come to power in the rebellion of 1959-62.

National Parks in Congo

Virunga National park
Virunga National Park is located Eastern DR Congo in the Virunga mountain ranges neighboring Volcanoes National park, Rwenzori mountain, Rwindi plains, Lake Edward. The park was created in 1925 as Albert national Park making it the first National park in Africa.

It was later named Virunga National park in 1969 by president Mobutu who had started on taking more effort on conservation having deteriorated past Congo independence in 1960.
Virunga national park covers an area of 7800 square kilometers, with a bigger part under forest cover.
